Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean sea and a popular tourist destination. There are many beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and rivers as well as mountainous regions with lush tropical foliage, throughout the island. The local food is delicious and affordable and the atmosphere and lifestyle is relaxed and laid back.

One of the most popular and well known attractions on the island is Dunn’s River Falls, located in Ocho Rios. Visitors can climb to the top of the waterfall with a guide, relax in one of the many pools of water at the bottom, or sunbath and swim in the beach area. The climb can be slippery, and may be arduous for small children as there’s cascading water at some points. Food, drink and souvenirs are offered by various vendors.

Seven Mile Beach in Negril is a long stretch of beach hosting locals, singles, families, and some adult only resorts. You will find restaurants and all sorts of food vendors and beach bars along the beach. There’s clubs and bars up and down the beach for nightlife activity. You can take a trip on a sailboat or rent equipment for water sports.

For nature and coffee lovers, there’s the magnificent blue mountains. You can relax and enjoy a fragrant cup of Blue Mountain Coffee, or go hiking and camping throughout the mountains. You can also tour the factory that manufactures the coffee; it’s located at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet. Hiking and biking tours are also available.

Boston Beach in Portland is well known for its clear waters, white sand and delicious, authentic food. Jamaica is famous for jerk chicken and pork and this area has some of the best smoked meats. The beach water can be a bit rough at times so it’s not the best for children.

Another celebrated beach in Portland is Frenchman’s Cove. This secluded beach is very unique and the views and scenery are spectacular. The ocean actually meets a river at this spot, so you can swim in the ocean and then wash off in the crystal clear waters of the river, with tiny tropical fish swimming around. There’s a perfect photo opportunity of the area in a swing that hangs over the river, and amazing views from the villas located on top of cliffs surrounding the beach.

For a day of total relaxation, there’s rafting on The Martha Brae River, located in Trelawny. A well trained guide takes you down the 3 mile river in a handmade bamboo raft. The lush greenery and exotic birds, along with the sounds of the flowing river, are very romantic and peaceful. The depth of the river is only about 4 feet most of the year.

These are just a few of the many sights and attractions throughout the beautiful island of Jamaica. The people are warm, welcoming and very diverse; they go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at ease.
